Breast Milk Nutrition
Our lab investigates the nutritional biology of breast milk. Specifically, the interactions between breast milk molecules and microbes that colonize the infant gut. Breast milk direct the establishment and function of gut microbiomes early in life that contribute to infant health.
We are interested in the molecular evolution of commensal genomes in particular as they pertain to colonizing mammals. Comparative and functional systems approaches inform mechanistic studies to understand the underlying molecular biology.
Microbial Community Ecology
We study microbial assemblies within the gut as well as other communities that colonize mammals and their environments. Our goal is to understand the emergent properties of microbial communities that enable cross-kingdom interactions.
